What Makes You, You

Today, Kelsey of Gather + Co, shares her thoughts during these unprecedented times.

I initially sat down to write a lengthy post about the science of hair and how it changes over time…boring, I know. But then all of this Coronavirus stuff happened and I’ve had some time to really think about how I want to show up–both in my business and as a human being.

I decided it was time to put pen to paper and share my thoughts with the Om Mama community. So, here we go…

First things first, a little intro because you might not know me yet! My name is Kelsey, I own Gather + Co, a salon suite located near University Village. If you were to meet me in person, I’d probably down play what I do and say I “just do hair.” But the truth is, I do so much more. And I bet you do too! Yes, I do cut, color and bridal styling, but what really lights my fire is the ability to come alongside people and support them through their many chapters of life. I love to encourage people to take action on their dreams, try new things, put themselves first and live a positive life. I view hairstyling as a door that opens, allowing me the opportunity to inspire others.

Could I go on and on about my salon and why you should support me? Sure. But what I really want to talk about is the labels we assign ourselves. Whatever your title is: mom, photographer, esthetician, accountant, etc. I want you to stop and think about what special thing you bring to the world. You know, that spark that all your besties would talk about when describing you. Your secret sauce. Your gift.

See the thing is, this extra down time has made me really think about our priorities. Like why do we always immediately ask people, “what they do” as if that defines their being? I’m so guilty of this because I love people and understanding how their brains work, what their talents are. But I vote, starting now, we talk more about our passions, relationships, curiosities and faith. We are so much more than our work! I’ll say that one more time for the people in the back. We are so much more than our work! Because now, more than ever, you can have all the money in the world today and lose it all tomorrow. Let’s instead celebrate what lasts: great conversations, loving relationships, passions that light up our life. Let’s embrace and share those things instead.

So, moving forward, I encourage you to celebrate who you are and come alongside others that bring out your best qualities. Then share that with the world! Whether that be through your business or in your day-to-day life, I’d love to see more positivity and self-confidence in this crazy world. And remember, I’ll be right here, cheering you on from behind the salon chair.

Cheers,

Kelsey Marie
